13th Annual AU Heads of State Summit on Agriculture and Food Security, June 24-July 3, Sirte, Libya and “CAADP Day” Side Event

June 18, 2009

The 13th annual Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government will take place in Sirte, Libya from June 24 to July 3, 2009. The theme of the summit for this year is “Investing in Agriculture for Economic Growth and Food Security.”

The Summit is being convened six years after the endorsement of CAADP by the African Heads of State and Government and against a backdrop of renewed interested in the agricultural development agenda amidst a global financial crisis and period of volatile and high food prices. This meeting is seen as an important milestone in the advancement of the CAADP agenda and an opportunity to renew commitments of increased agricultural expenditures by African leaders. Therefore, the NEPAD Secretariat will hold a “CAADP Day” event prior to the commencement of the summit. The “CAADP Day” will promote dialogue between African leaders and development partners on the progress and challenges in the implementation of CAADP since 2003. ReSAKSS coordinators will be in attendance to share information with policymakers and to participate in the side event.
